Kaštel Štafilić – Resnik is the first underwater Paleolithic site in Croatia to be systematically investigated. The site is located in the Kaštela Bay in central Dalmatia which, like the rest of the Adriatic Basin, has undergone geomorphological changes caused, among other factors, by marine transgression. Sea level rise at the Pleistocene to Holocene transition destructively affected the Pleistocene strata and caused the submergence of the site. The lithic finds are typologically placed in the Mousterian culture, with the exception of a few finds belonging to the Upper Paleolithic. The paper presents the results of technological and typological analysis of findings collected by I. Svilan in Kaštela Bay and, for the first time, raw material analysis of lithic finds from systematic research but also from the collection of I. Svilan, which confirm that Neanderthals occupied Kaštela Bay during the Middle Paleolithic

This paper presents the results of archaeological investigation conducted in the course of 2014 and 2015 at four sites in the Lim Channel area in Istria County. The investigation is part of the Croatian Science Foundation’s Archaeological Investigations into the Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene of the Lim Channel project (ARCHAEOLIM). The fieldwork was conducted at four locations: Romuald’s Cave, Abri Kontija 002, Pećina Cave near Rovinjsko Selo and Lim 001. Also conducted in 2015 was an underwater field survey of a part of Lim Channel, geoarchaeological sampling and geophysical measurement

Project Late Mousterian in the eastern Adriatic – towards understanding of late Neanderthals’ identity and Their Demise: Summary of the 2nd and 3rd years of research

The paper reports on the activities and preliminary results of archaeological research of Middle Palaeolithic sites in Dalmatia and geological research consisting of drilling at potential sites. The activities were carried out within the framework of the second and third years of the research project Late Mousterian in the Eastern Adriatic – towards understanding of late Neanderthals’ identity and their demise, funded by the Croatian Science Foundation. The fieldwork mostly focused on the continuation of excavation at Velika pećina in Kličevica and research at underwater Palaeolithic site of Kaštel Štafilić – Resnik, in addition to the test excavation of a site in the hinterland of Kaštela (Giljanovići/Karanušići) and geological drillings

A Roman Barge from the Kupa River at Kamensko, Croatia: Evidence of a Regional Shipbuilding Tradition of the Danube River Basin in Southeastern Europe

    No full text
International audienceThe Kamensko barge is a flat-bottomed fluvial vessel dated between the 1 st century BC and the 3 rd century AD. Its remains lie on the riverbed of the Kupa next to the town of Karlovac in Croatia. Constructed mostly from oak on the principles of bottombased construction, it is 2 m wide and preserved to a length of 12 m. On its last journey it was transporting a cargo of several hundred bricks. Its interesting structural features suggest a kinship with other Roman-era shipwrecks from the Danube hydrographical basin
